What to Expect

Originally intended as a penitentiary in the late 19th century, Prison Island (locally known as Changuu Island) later served as a quarantine station. Today, it is a serene sanctuary famous for its most legendary residents: a colony of Aldabra giant tortoises, some of which are over 150 years old!

During the tour, you will get to wander through the historic prison ruins, feed and pet these magnificent gentle giants, and learn about the island's fascinating past from a knowledgeable local guide. Afterward, you can take a dip in the turquoise waters, snorkel among the vibrant nearby coral reefs, or simply unwind on the powdery white sand beach before your boat heads back to the main island.
